so more often then not i get asked what i’m studying in college. When i reply graphic design, most people reply with “what are you going to do?”. well i’ll tell you, just look around. more then likey the commercial on your tv, the ads in your magazine, the cover of the book you’re reading, the box your cereal comes in, the poster you’re buying, all of these things at one point in another were designed by a graphic designer.
i chose to pursue a degree in Fine Arts, with a concentration in graphic design because after years of working as a drone worker bee, being miserable and striped of all creativity and self identity, i decided enough was enough. Ive always loved art, its always come easy to me to be creative, so why not get a degree in it.
Graphic design is one of the few art concentrations where you can actually find employment. Not many other art forms can you get your art seen (advertisements) and have it be seen on a large scale, by many people. I know that paying rent and eating are a catalyst in my decision, but lets be honest, painters don’t make money to pay the bills – hence the starving artist term.
While i’m fully aware that every asshole who has Photoshop loaded onto their home computer thinks they are a designer, its more to that. Effective Design is design you don’t even notice.
One of my besties let me borrow a book recently called D.I.Y. – Design It Yourself. I found a few parts of the opening essays to explain what the Graphic Design field is, and i personally took these sentiments to heart:
“… celebrates graphic design as a medium of public communication that should be accessible to everyone. The ability to publish is one of the key privileges of a free society. Design is art that people use. Compared to law, medicine, or architecture, whose formal discourses date back to antiquity, graphic design is a newcomer in the professional scene, appearing in the early twentieth century. One could say that for graphic design, the barbarians have always been at the gate. We are the barbarians, the bastard children of the fine arts. We are the publicist and popularizers, the people of the street.”
-Ellen Lupton
so i hope that shed some light on the profession, and why i chose it.
